Bangkok

Bangkok is a city that has a reputation of its own; its name basically translates as "The City of Angels" although it's had a long standing nickname as the 'Sin City' of Asia for many years. Bangkok is Thailand's third capital city built in 1782 near the sea for easy defense from Burmese invaders and trade; though this may prove to be a mistake as Bangkok is steadily sinking at around 2 inches per year.

Considered to be one of the largest cities in the world Bangkok is home to more than 10 million residents, a tenth of the population of Thailand, the majority from the poorer provinces outside Bangkok who have come to the big city in search of work and their fortunes.

Bangkok's traffic jams are legendary, reputed to be the worst in the world but this is a problem that is being tackled first with the BTS sky train and now with the new MRT subway system which is hoping to be a factor that contributes to Bangkok becoming one of Asia's first class cities on par with Singapore and Hong Kong.

Bangkok has a lot more to offer than just pollution and traffic though. A visit to exciting Bangkok city you will find bargain shopping, exotic nightlife, delicious food, world class hotels and spas, modern cinemas, great attractions, historical buildings, friendly people, and a bustling array of life, sounds, sights and smells on every street.

Bangkok is an experience, it's a city of vast contrasts, a street stall selling fried locusts in front of a 5 star hotel restaurant, a tuk tuk squeezing it's way through a maze of silver Mercedes Benzes on the roads, temples set amongst a backdrop of blue mirrored skyscrapers, small Buddhist shrines nestling on the edge of the red light districts waiied by the girls on their way to work, praying for that good luck that Bangkok always promises to offer.
